Halloween season is here, and nothing sets the mood quite like cozying up on the couch with your favorite spooky movie. Whether you’re a fan of the terrifying classics, quirky comedies, or nostalgic family flicks, Halloween movie nights are a tradition for many.
We asked a few badass ladies about their favorite Halloween films and what makes them special. From childhood scares to timeless fun, here’s what they had to say:
Growing up on Thrillers
Digital Marketing Consultant & Trainer Chris Lam says, “I grew up in the ’80s, and my mom loved horror movies, so I was indoctrinated early with ‘Friday the 13th’, ‘Ghoulies’, and ‘Nightmare on Elm Street.’ Oh, and I can’t forget Elvira’s Saturday afternoon movies. Definitely inappropriate for anyone under 10! Looking back, I don’t know why I didn’t just tell my mom, ‘Um, I don’t want to watch this.’”
Chris recalls how horror movies weren’t just a Halloween tradition for her family but a regular part of her childhood. In the ‘80s, films like ‘Friday the 13th’ and ‘Elm Street’ were the epitome of horror, with slashers, jump scares, and nightmares that had people sleeping with the lights on. As Chris reflects on her childhood viewing habits, she admits, “I don’t really watch Halloween movies anymore.”
After being immersed in horror classics at such a young age, it’s no surprise that Chris has had her fill!
Still, for those who love a good scare, these iconic films continue to thrill new generations of horror fans every October. So, if you’re up for a chilling night in, why not revisit some of these ‘80s horror staples? Just be prepared for the jump scares!
A Quirky Classic with a Twist
While some prefer spine-tingling horror, others like their Halloween movies served with a side of humor and whimsy. Shelley Simpson, Founder & CEO of Small & Mighty Marketing, a self-proclaimed fan of all things quirky, shares her favorite Halloween movie: “For me, it’s ‘Beetlejuice’ all the way!” ‘Beetlejuice’, with its blend of ghostly mischief and Tim Burton’s signature quirky visuals, has become a cult classic since its release in 1988. From Michael Keaton’s hilarious and chaotic portrayal of the title character to the offbeat charm of the Deetz family’s haunted house, this movie is a perfect mix of spooky and fun.
Shelley adds, “Maybe using cannabis while watching makes it even better!” Cannabis is often paired with movies for a heightened sensory experience, and Shelley is all for enjoying Halloween with a little added creativity!
Pumpkins, Peanuts, and Pure Nostalgia
Not all Halloween movies have to be scary; some can even bring a sense of nostalgia and warmth. Kelly Ward’s favorite Halloween film is the beloved classic, ‘It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.’ This animated film from the 1960s has been a staple of Halloween family traditions for decades, capturing the simple joys of childhood during the spooky season.
“I’m not a fan of horror movies but I feel great nostalgia for ‘It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown’,” Kelly shares. There’s something so comforting about watching movies each year—it takes us back to simpler times.
The charm of ‘It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,’ lies in its timeless innocence. It’s a feel-good film about friendship, belief, and the excitement surrounding Halloween night—perfect for anyone who prefers lighthearted fun over scary thrills.
Whether you’re in the mood for a nostalgic favorite, something with a quirky twist, or a lighthearted escape, there’s a movie on this list to fit your vibe. From childhood throwbacks to unconventional picks, these films offer a little something for everyone. So, the next time you’re deciding what to watch, why not try one of these suggestions?
